August’s full moon is often referred to as the Wyrt, Wort, Barley, Corn or Red moon. The energies around this moon are ones of abundance, agriculture and marriage. We are encouraged to begin harvesting and collecting any herbs that we will use over the next year, and storing them. Magic done at this time of year can be to help yourself or someone else (who has asked you!) reap the benefits of hard work done.
There are many gems that can boost this moon’s energy and among them are agate, amazonite, aventurine, bloodstone, calcite, emerald, jade, malachite, peridot, ruby, topaz, and tourmaline. These gems can be worn, put in a pocket, or used during prayer or meditation. If the intention is there to focus on abundance, agriculture and marriage, these gems will help you connect with those energies.
The moon at this time brings us feelings of fearlessness, activity, change and flexibility. Bear Woman is a Native American Goddess we can invoke to achieve these energies in ourselves. When we collect our herbs for the year (such as sweetgrass and sage) in August, we can give our thanks to Bear Woman and Great Spirit (or to your God/Goddess) for providing these sacred tools to us. How do we give thanks? We can sprinkle tobacco around the areas where we collect the herbs, or even easier, we can sprinkle birdseed. The point is that we give thanks to the universe for providing.
Oils can be used most easily in a diffuser. Some can be added in small quantities to baths and others can be used in soap and candle making. Do some research before you try them in other ways, aside from diffusers, as some are corrosive and cause skin irritations. The following oils will help you connect with your unconscious mind and set the intention of abundance, agriculture and marriage:
· Basil
· Bergamot
· Cinnamon
· Coriander
· Oak moss
· Patchouli
· Pine
· Tangerine
· Vetivert
One of the best and most effective ways of connecting to certain energies is to meditate and visualize. This particular meditation will help you focus your intention on the energies of the August moon. You can visualize by yourself or in a group. You can tape-record it ahead of time, or simply read it now and take yourself through it as you go.
Relax your body and mind. Focus on taking deep, slow breaths. Continue this until you feel very relaxed and have let go of all the little daily problems and issues that you have been thinking about. Feel very grounded and connected to the here and now.
In your mind, visualize walking on a path. Take note of the grass, trees, the path itself, any animals or flowers you see. Get a sense of what direction you are walking. This is a very safe space. Up ahead you see someone on the path. This person looks familiar to you and as you get closer, you see a smiling woman. This is Bear Woman and she is here to show you some sacred plants. Walk with Bear Woman and get a sense of her. What is she wearing? How does she look? Do you two speak to each other and if so, what do you say?
Up ahead is a clearing in the woods. There is a space for you to sit down. It may be a log or a big rock. Sit with Bear Woman. As you sit with her, you notice she is carrying or wearing a small leather bag. She opens the bag and shows you what is inside. Take a look at what she shows you and tells you about the items. She also shows you some dried plants and herbs. These are ones you may or may not have heard of before. Spend some time learning from Bear Woman. She will tell you what the herbs are used for. This is knowledge you will bring back and use in your everyday life.
It is time to say good-bye so thank Bear Woman for her wisdom. There is a blanket that you have brought along and this is a gift you give to her. Walk back down the path and bring your conscious mind back to where you are.
When you have completed your visualization, you may want to write your experience in a journal or draw a picture.
