Choosing Tarot Cards

Finding the right deck to divine the future

How to choose your first tarot deck - tarot for beginners.

Anyone can read tarot cards – we all have the ability, but many lack the confidence to go where their intuition takes them.

The old adage that when the pupil is ready the teacher will come is true for tarot too. When you are ready for the cards you will find a deck that you simply cannot live without and which resonates with you in a way no other deck has ever done.

For example, my first deck was the Celtic Tarot, which I bought for myself, after only having a couple of decks to choose from in a book shop.

I thought I was ready for the cards and was interested in Celtic mythology. Unfortunately the images on them did not resonate with me and were so similar in the minor arcana that I found them hard to use, especially as I have developed my skills as an intuitive reader - which means I like to see “busy” pictures in my cards, where there is a lot going on for me to focus and choose from.

I persevered with them for many years and they did teach me the basics of the meanings of the cards and suits and the major arcana which gave me a good grounding for the future.

My real development as a reader came when a friend gave me a deck of cards she had bought, but which didn’t suit her.

The cards immediately connected with me and I fell in love. I had amazing results using them, surprising myself and those I read for. They formed the basis for my confidence, and I now use several different decks, depending on the situation and the client.

Over time every one who is serious about reading the Tarot will find the deck or decks that suit them.

It’s not something to be rushed in to – a deck will turn up for you. However, there are some hints to help find just the right one.

Although many people say that you should never buy your own deck, I find that this has proven to be untrue, as I have several decks which I have purchased myself, and which work beautifully.

Many good metaphysical shops will keep tarot decks especially for viewing, so purchasers can take a good lock through the cards to see if they connect with them.

Try to find the Death card in a deck – because it is often by looking at Death that you can see whether you will like to work with the deck or not. Death should always contain an element of hope and rebirth.

When you do buy your deck remember to treat it with respect and clean and cleanse them when necessary – Tarot cards are not a party trick to be brought out on a whim – they are a serious tool for discovering hidden patterns in our lives, often giving us a peek at the future, and invariably surprising us with their messages.
