Looking at the sum on a roll of dice can answer a question that you have about your life.

Unlike interpreting tarot cards or tealeaves, cleromancy, or using dice to divine answers to questions, requires little intuition.

When you feel too tired or distracted to connect with your imagination and intuition, try casting dice for a quick, clear answer to a query.

Materials for Cleromancy

Rachel Pollack in Teach Yourself Fortunetelling (Rainbird Publishing, 1986) recommends using three dice, although other systems use two dice.

You will also need to draw a 12” circle on a sheet of paper or a piece of cloth.

Casting the Dice to Tell Your Fortune

Think of your question as you mix the dice in your hands. Cast the dice into the circle.

If one dice falls outside the circle then it indicates a block to the developments shown by sum of all three dice. A roll of four suggests disappointment, but if one of the dice is outside the circle, it could indicate that something is blocking this feeling from blossoming.

If two dice fall outside the circle it warns of a disagreement about the event shown by the sum of all three dice. For example, if the dots on the dice total ten, if indicates the start of something new. With two of the dice outside the circle, it may suggest that this situation will cause a dispute.

If all three dice fall outside the circle, try again. If the dice land beyond the circle a second time, try again the next day as the situation is unclear.

Reading Your Fortune with Dice

Add the sum of all three dice. Read the following interpretation and consider how this statement responds to your question.

  • A roll of three suggests an unanticipated but favorable event.
  • Four emphasizes dissatisfaction with your current situation. You may be headed in a disappointing direction.
  • Five anticipates something you desire coming to you in a surprising way.
  • Six warns of obstacles blocking your way, particularly if your question was about business
  • Seven hints that rumors are impeding progress toward your goal.
  • Eight indicates that someone or something from outside your daily life will influences your situation.
  • Nine forecasts love and harmony either entering or returning to your life.
  • Ten indicates beginnings. A roll of ten could reveal the birth of a child; the start of a personal, professional, or romantic relationship; or the onset of new job, depending on the question you asked.
  • Eleven suggests parting with a loved one.
  • Twelve indicates that good news is coming your way. Watch for a letter, or even an email, bearing welcome news.
  • Thirteen warns of a gloomy development in your current situation.
  • Fourteen suggests that you will make a new friend or that a current friend will appear ready to help you with your circumstances.
  • Fifteen offers a warning to avoid anything that lures you with promises of a painless resolution to your situation.
  • Sixteen indicates that traveling will be involved in your quest for an answer.
  • Seventeen warns of, or helps you welcome, a change in plans.
  • Eighteen promises success in your endeavor.

Divining answers to your questions by using dice offers a system that provides a clear-cut response to a present or future quandary. The system’s lack of flexibility in interpretation may frustrate you. You can decide what situations in your life this method will work best.
