For thousands of years the Chinese have believed that health, happiness, luck and prosperity all depend on the relationship people have with their environment.

According to the ancient tradition of Feng Shui, the direction a building faces, the way in which furniture is arranged and the harmony of the positive and negative currents that are in the environment have a remarkable influence on everyone's general well-being.

Enhancing Surroundings

Feng Shui is based on the principle that the five basic elements (fire, earth, wood, metal and water) and the two primary forces (yin and yang) interact within the environment, rendering some places more favourable than others. The phrase Feng Shui literally means ‘wind’ and ‘water’ relating to the currents of energy that have a constant impact on our surroundings.

The positive Feng Shui energies, known as Shen Ch’io, should be allowed to flow along their winding course without impediment. The negative Sha currents are not favourable: they strike along straight lines like secret arrows. To prevent them from causing harm, screens or mirrors can be placed in their path to deflect the flow of the current.

Interior Design

Feng Shui is gaining popularity in the West, especially with regard to the layout and interior design of homes. However this ancient art is not just about achieving harmony in the house and garden. The Chinese believe that Feng Shui principles extend to such areas as travel, romance, family relationships, health, diet, career and wealth. Even house numbers can have a bearing on their occupants’ luck and well-being. The number thirteen for instance, is said to be lucky for a home, as are six and nine.

Travel

Through the use of sophisticated calculations passed on the Lo P’an or Grid Plate, Feng Shui experts can help work out fortunate days to travel in certain directions. The natal element of the traveller’s chart will be linked into these calculations. Harmonious aspects mean that the journey will be auspicious but if aspects do not recommend the journey it is believed that portents can be averted by changing either the date of travel or the route.

Career

As well as using Feng Shui to help select a suitable site for commercial premises the positioning of furniture and fittings within the workplace can also have a significant effect on business success. For this reason, Feng Shui experts are consulted to help determine the most favourable layout of offices.

Desks and chairs are positioned according to the eight trigrams of the I-Ching and the directions associated with each of them. Ken, for instance, signifies ‘keeping still’ and is linked with the North East, a direction seen as favourable for entrances, storage and security. The North West is where the management should locate their offices as this is the direction associated with the trigram Ch’ien, which, translated, means ‘the creative’.

The boss (who should always occupy a position of strength) can increase his superiority by putting clients in a position that will receive negative Sha currents. The director’s desk should face into the room and ought not to be positioned directly in front of a window. The receptionist’s desk should be at an angle to the entrance so that it does not hinder the flow of helpful Ch’i currents. Harmful influences can be broken by obliquely arranged furniture and well placed mirrors.
