Adorable Frog, Stephen Barnett
Totems are found in many cultures and belief systems around the world. Discover the mystical power of the frog and learn how to harness its power.

Frogs. Their magic is reflected in their amazing transformation from egg, to tadpole, to frog, all of which takes place in water. The element of water plays heavily on Frog, and it is natural that much of frog magic involves water and its aspects.

Water cleanses, refreshes, and transforms by washing the impurities from the body. Frog is associated with emotion and also the lunar energies that assert its pull over the element of water. Frogs live in harmony with nature and are most affected when an imbalance occurs. Someone with frog as a totem may need to strike a healthy balance in their life.

Frogs in Mythology

Ancient Egyptians held frogs in high regard, and they were often mummified and buried with the deceased. The frog was a symbol of fertility, birth, rebirth, and resurrection. Heqet, also known as Herit or Heket, was the goddess that assisted Isis in the resurrection of Osiris so that Horus could be conceived and given life.

In earlier Egyptian mythology, Egyptians also honored four frog gods of the Ogdoad. They were called Nun (water), Amen (invisibility), Heh (infinity), and Kek (darkness). In Indian mythology it was believed that frogs personified the thunder in the sky, and interestingly, the Sanscrit word for "frog" also means "clouds." Japan also considers the frog to be very lucky.

Frogs as Summoners and Healers

In most species, only the male frog can call, and it uses its voice to attract mates. Native Americans and Aborigines believed that the frog's voice also had the power to call upon the rains. This may have led to the use of drums in an attempt to mimic the frog and summon rain in some arid regions. Those with a frog totem may need to tune in to their inner voice.

Frog brings the gift of healing. Secretions from the skin of some frogs are used in making medicines, and more recent research suggests that they could be vital in the war against cancer and other diseases. Because of research such as this, saving declining frog populations is more important than ever.

If frog has presented itself, there are several messages that it could be bringing. It may be time to cleanse some negativity and become healthier. It may be time to breath new life into an old projet or goal. Or perhaps it is meant as a signal to release one's own voice. It definitely means that frog deserves another look.
