You have heard the phrases like attracts like and birds of a feather flock together, right? That is the basic premises of this book written by a husband and wife team, Jerry and Esther Hicks, who channel a group who call themselves 'Abraham'.

What is The Law of Attraction?

Though there have been many references to The Law of Attraction by some of history’s greatest teachers, this is one of the first books that deals solely with this topic. Similar to the recent bestselling phenomenon of The Secret, this book offers an explanation on how to achieve all your dreams and goals through the power of self-awareness and positive thinking.

Does Positive Thinking Really Work?

You don’t have to believe in the supernatural, the power of the Universe or throw away your religious belief system to use the messages in this text.

This book outlines the power of positive thinking in such a way that even if you leave the spiritual element out of your thinking, the information and lessons described within could increase your happiness and help you avoid unhappy emotions and situations. Much of it is simple concepts to help people un-clutter their thoughts and focus on what’s important.

How Does it Work?

Just like that famous line in the Kevin Costner film, Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.” The same applies to the concept of positive thinking. If you focus on something, it will come. It’s like riding a bicycle. You don’t look ahead, see a curve, look down at your hands, gage how much to twist your wrist so that the wheel will turn fifteen inches to the right…No. You look ahead into the curve, see where you want to go, and your body takes over and makes it happen.

This is the basic principle of The Law of Attraction. The book outlines exercises and lessons to help you harness thoughts of health, wealth, love, success and so on and thus draw those experiences into your life.

Ever had a great day and everything seems easier? You breathe easy and have conversations and events just somehow work out so that the day just seems to flow from one good moment to another? That’s Law of Attraction. The positive energy acts like a magnet, attracting more of the same to you.

The Law of Attraction For Good…And Bad

The opposite is true too, though. Focus on what you don’t want, and you risk drawing more of those types of people and experiences into your life. Ever woken up to a bad day and had it just get worse as the hours ticked by? That’s the basic concept of Law of Attraction. By focusing in on the negative experience, you have drawn more of them to you.

So Where Is the Problem?

Where this book gets more difficult to digest is with the notion that people are responsible for everything and everyone that comes into their lives. That means that the guy who cuts you off on the highway was called to you by your negative energy. Taken to an extreme, that also means that the person shot in a random shooting, the children killed in wars and rape victims actually called those experiences to them.

The authors do their best to explain this away by saying children are like sponges, soaking up the energy of those around them and thus attracting the positive or negative occurrences based on those people’s energy. As for adults? What happens to them is drawn to them by their energy, beliefs and thoughts. Like attracts like. No exception.
