Isn't this expansion of our thinking from either/or to more what some new age and/or new thought groups are trying to open? They are thinking outside the box impossed by society and religion and seeing the world from a more spirituality perspective.

God bless, J

The expansion of our dualist thinking, a legacy from Aristotle and classical Greek philosophers, may have been chanelled through the New Age movement - what we're talking about is four-fold logic, existent in Eastern systems of thought, particulalry evident in Buddhism and espoused by some Hindu gurus. So that we have, rather than thing is 'either A' or 'Not A' (ie 'B), we have the multiplicity encapsulated in logic with the possibilities of thing is a, thing is b, thing is a and b, or thing is neither a nor b, which renders a far more accurate model of the universe, expressible in (almost) rational terms. Must western philosophers would probably balk at such a formula happy

As an extension to the previous post, while the either/or has been a model fed through classical philosophy and subsequently become very much an integral part of a Western way of thinking, the four-fold system of logic is very integral to an Eastern mind-set -and while four-fold, being itself beyond a dual mode of thought actua;ly extends outwards into infinite combinations through its recognition that something can be neither this or that thing that we say it is. It seems to alow for the limits of language, whereas the dualist model tries to wrap all phenomena within langauge, which when we talk of mystical experiences, for instance, is not always possible or accurate. I don't know of any direct examples of New Age/New Thought advocating the four-fold system, however as mentioned, because the BNew Age movement, particularly Theosophy, was a gateway for Eastern ideas to begin to see trnaslation and absorption in Western culture, there is certainly an indirect responisbility for these movements for enabling entry of the four-fold sytem in Western dialogues. Or quatra-logues!!! happy Let's quatralogue more often and see what happens!

As stated, mystical experiences are difficult to explain in words (at least that is what I took from your comments?) and personal mystical experiences that are validated in new age and/or new thought thinkers, fall under this admonition.

The new age and/or new thought people I have met are trying to understand their own experiences rather than a group of experiences. It is the being on their own in thinking and experiencing that is the key to opening to thought from all sources.
